GM CASE STUDY

FIFTEEN YEARS. 6.5 MILLION COMPONENTS.

Polyfuze was the only label supplier to qualify.

A global automotive manufacturer required safety identification to remain legible for the full fifteen-year life of the vehicle, on interior surfaces exposed to sunscreen, insect repellent and constant human contact. Most labels passed initial validation. They degraded anyway — not immediately, not visibly at first, but predictably. The problem was never compliance at installation. It was compliance over time.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

COMPLIANCE OVER TIME.

A global automotive manufacturer faced a persistent issue with safety labeling on interior and component surfaces, specifically in environments exposed to chemicals such as sunscreen, insect repellent, and human contact. GM has an expectation that a part label last 15 years, the life expectancy of the product. While most labels passed initial validation, they degraded over time.

Not immediately. Not visibly at first. But predictably.

The challenge was not compliance at installation; it was compliance over time. By transitioning to material-integrated identity, the organization achieved life-of-vehicle durability across 6.5M+ components, aligning safety information with the lifecycle of the product itself. Polyfuze was the only label supplier to qualify.

01 / THE PROBLEM

THE QUIET FAILURE OF SAFETY SYSTEMS

SAFETY LABELS RARELY FAIL ON DAY ONE. THEY FAIL SLOWLY.

Chemical exposure, abrasion, UV degradation, and repeated human contact gradually erase the system’s ability to communicate risk. The first effects can appear cosmetic: text fades, edges lift, and information becomes harder to read. Over time, the identification can no longer perform its safety function.

02 / WHAT FAILED BEFORE

THE LIFECYCLE MISMATCH

SHORT-TERM IDENTITY APPLIED TO LONG-TERM SYSTEMS.

Automotive components are engineered for ten- to fifteen-year service lives, real-world chemical exposure, and strict regulatory expectations. Traditional labels remain surface-dependent, adhesive-reliant, and vulnerable to degradation. That mismatch turns a label-selection problem into a structural risk.

03 / THE POLYFUZE APPROACH

IDENTITY AS A PERMANENT LAYER

A MONO MATERIAL SYSTEM WITH NO SURFACE INTERFACE TO FAIL.

Polyfuze changed the relationship between graphic and component. Instead of applying a printed, replaceable surface layer, compatible polyolefin graphics were fused into the material itself. Safety information could not peel, chemicals had no adhesive interface to attack, and identity durability could match the component’s intended life.

04 / VALIDATION + TESTING

THE ONLY SUPPLIER TO QUALIFY

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE AND LIFE-OF-VEHICLE PERFORMANCE.

The program required permanent legibility on interior surfaces exposed to sunscreen, insect repellent, perspiration, abrasion, and constant contact. Polyfuze qualified against the customer’s fifteen-year life expectation after conventional label systems degraded over time.

05 / RESULTS + PERFORMANCE

IMPACT AT SCALE

PERMANENT LEGIBILITY ACROSS 6.5M+ COMPONENTS.

The material-integrated system delivered chemical resistance, life-of-vehicle identity, and global production scale. The engineering conversation shifted from choosing a label to designing an identity system whose performance follows the same lifecycle as the product.

06 / WHAT THIS REVEALS

TIME IS THE REAL TEST

DURABILITY IS NOT ABOUT SURVIVING INSTALLATION. IT IS ABOUT SURVIVING TIME.

In safety systems, initial compliance is only the beginning. When identification must persist as long as the product, labeling is no longer the right abstraction. Permanent identity becomes part of the product’s engineering.

THE SCIENCE OF MONO MATERIAL LABELING

IDENTITY DESIGNED AS PART OF THE PRODUCT.

Polyfuze fuses compatible polyolefin graphics into the plastic substrate itself—creating permanent identity without a separate label, adhesive, or incompatible material layer.
