How Fusion Labels Eliminate Secondary Processes

We talk a lot about durability and permanency, but this isn’t the only problem that polymer fusion labels solve when it comes to labeling plastics.

If you utilize another form of labeling – hot stamps, pad printing, stickers, for example – then chances are you’ve also had to use a secondary process to prep the surface of the plastic in order to enhance adhesion capabilities.

This is because plastic is a low surface energy material, and it inherently rejects anything trying to stick to it. In order to achieve any measure of adhesion, you have to take extra steps to try to help the label “stick.”

This might involve setting aside a plastic product to sit for 24-48 hours to allow it to outgas.

Having to let a part sit for that long creates a huge bottleneck.

Furthermore, after the part has finally finished outgassing, you then may need to pre-treat the area where the label will be applied.

Corona and Plasma are two treatments that are often used to attempt to help a label stick to the surface.

Both require extra processing time in order to finally get the product finished.

Polyfuze provides a labeling solution that eliminates the need to wait for any outgassing, as well as the need for plasma or corona treating the plastic product.

Polymer fusion labeling is a label that is made of 100% compatible polymer material. No inks, substrates, or adhesives, which are all layers that require these extra processes in order to help a label stick.

Polymer fusion labels were specifically designed without these components in order to ensure that they are 100% compatible with the plastic surface that they stick to.

The labels are fused into the subsurface of the plastic using heat from standard hot stamping equipment. There are no additional processes required at all, no pre or post treatment required. Once the label and plastic part are fused, they become one solid piece with no change in durability or structural integrity for the life of the part.

One of our customers, Mayhew Steel, described how switching from pad printing to fusion labels helped them eliminate corona treating entirely from their manufacturing process, which had been causing a huge bottleneck.

Haley Connelley, a Manufacturing Engineer from Mayhew said, “The Polyfuze Graphics® work well for us as we needed a method to brand our Dominator Handles in-house. This labeling process enabled us to use existing hot stamping equipment to apply the labels to our product. We traditionally sent handles to an outside facility for pad printing, which adds time to the manufacturing process. By utilizing an in-house labeling process, we are able to save time and money.”
