Power equipment, small engines, battery power systems, UTV’s, golf cars and personal transport vehicles are all encompassed under the Outdoor Power Equipment banner which serves industries such as police & fire, landscaping, municipal operations, logging, outdoor recreation and more.

Over the past 30+ years, traditional materials like metals have been replaced by lower cost, more efficient and durable, cost-effective polyolefin thermoplastics for various products, parts and components used in the manufacture of this equipment such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP).

These plastics exhibit superior performance properties over that of metals and are intended to withstand several years of use and abuse while enduring extended exposure to UV, extreme hot and cold temperatures, chemicals, oils, washing / sanitizing processes and more. And because use of outdoor power equipment is inherently hazardous in nature, the durability and performance of permanent safety and warning labeling that meets life-use is as imperative as the product itself.

Yet, the performance properties that make polyolefin thermoplastics so versatile in the manufacture of outdoor power equipment simultaneously make them problematic for common “adhesion-based” labeling methods (pressure-sensitive adhesive, in-mold, hot stamp foil, heat transfer, silkscreen, pad printing, and more) that are intended to be on these products for life use.

The reason is because polyolefin thermoplastics closely resemble the “stick-resistant” nature of Teflon®, completely opposite of the materials that these products used to be manufactured from. This nature renders adhesion-based labeling methods ineffective as they’re both resistant and incompatible with these thermoplastics. Real-world proof consistently shows that these labeling methods cannot meet the life-use requirement necessary whether for safety / warning, informative or even branding. Labels in the field end up fading, peeling, disintegrating, and falling off during pressure washing or other exposures, a problem that only accelerates when products are subjected to even harsher environments.
