Labels For Automotive Products, Parts, and Components

More and more, the automotive industry is relying on lower cost, more efficient polyolefin thermoplastics such as high-density polyethylene plastic (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), thermoplastic vulcanized (TPV), thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) and more for many of the products, parts and components that make up vehicles today. Polyolefin thermoplastics are also used for many of the support products and automotive dunnage moving through factories as vehicles are built.

These robust polymers (mostly PE and PP) make up roughly 66% of the plastic used in the assembly of vehicles and are chosen specifically for their superior performance properties that include long service life with resistance to damage, chemicals, UV exposure and washing / sanitizing processes.

Thanks to polyolefin thermoplastics, cars today are more durable, reliable, and have better gas mileage than those built prior.

Labeling placed on these parts and components serves a vital role throughout the lifespan of a vehicle and supports operations throughout the entire automotive industry by providing indispensable information about safety, maintenance, authentication, traceability, and proper vehicle usage throughout the vehicle while also providing visibility for the movement of automotive parts throughout the supply chain. These labels are required to be present and legible for the lifespan of the vehicle, usually 15 years or greater.

Why Other Methods Fail

For example, safety, warning, and informational labels are seen on visors, under the hood, on batteries, battery packs, cell phone charging trays, and in EV frunks to warn users of potential risks or dangers. Other types of safety labeling can be found on support equipment such as EV charging stations with track/traceable labels affixed to dunnage carrying automotive parts and components.

The performance properties that make polyolefin thermoplastics so versatile for use with automotive products, parts, and components simultaneously make labeling these plastics problematic for common “adhesion-based” labeling methods (pressure-sensitive adhesive, in-mold, hot stamp foil, heat transfer, silkscreen, pad printing, and more) that are intended to be on these products for life use.

The reason! Polyolefin thermoplastics more closely resemble the “stick-resistant” properties of Teflon® than other polymers rendering adhesion-based labeling methods ineffective as they’re both resistant and incompatible. Real-world proof consistently shows that these labeling methods cannot meet the life-use requirement necessary whether for safety/warning, information, or even branding.

Labeling Automotive Interior Plastics

Modern cars have many advanced features and useful accessories designed for the benefit of both drivers and passengers, including everything from cell phone charging pads to sun visors and control panels, many of which require important branding and informative labels. Many of these interior fixtures are made from polyolefin plastics, which are difficult to permanently attach regular adhesive labels to long-term.

Polymer fusion labels by Polyfuze are the solution. Our labeling method is the only one that involves using heat to fuse a polymer label with a polymer part, ensuring that every label remains unfaded and in place for a lifetime of use.

Labeling Automotive Exterior Plastics

Cars are complex machines made of many different parts, and in today’s automotive industry, cost-effective and durable polyolefin plastics are often used to make many of the components under the hood. The only problem with this is that these parts may need safety or tracking labels, but traditional labeling methods fail due to the extreme conditions under the hood of a car. The high levels of heat and motion can cause standard labels to fade, peel, or wear away. Polyfuze approaches this problem from a whole different angle, by making labels out of the same cost-effective and durable plastics used to make car parts. Our advanced polymer fusion labels fuse into the plastic parts, ensuring that they can’t be lifted, peeled, or separated, providing essential information for life.

Labels for Automotive Dunnage

Automotive dunnage is a key component of the automotive industry. It’s used for loading, securing, and transporting automobiles and their many intricate parts from place to place, and often requires a variety of labels providing precise information (such as serial numbers and QR codes) used for tracking. However, when polyolefin plastics like polypropylene are used for dunnage, it can be difficult to attach the correct dunnage labels to the material. These plastics are naturally non-stick, and typical adhesive labels will simply peel away or fade over time due to repeated use and changing conditions.

Polyfuze’s polymer fusion labels are the solution. Our advanced fusion labeling method produces labels that are made from the same material as automotive dunnage, allowing the two to be fused together through the use of heat, providing necessary tracking information that won’t peel or fade for a lifetime of use.

Labels for Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular around the world, and their usage involves certain new components that we don’t find on traditional vehicles, like “frunks” (front trunks) and EV charge stations.

These items are often made with modern materials like polyolefin plastics, and they need to have labels attached denoting crucial information like weight limits and voltage levels. However, because polyolefin plastics are naturally stick-resistant, traditional labels will fail over time, often peeling or fading away. For Electric Vehicle labels, the best method is polymer fusion technology, provided by Polyfuze. Where traditional methods attempt to adhere to plastic, our advanced polymer labels fuse directly onto the products they’re attached to, becoming part of the structure of the product, ready to be relied upon for a lifetime of use.

Automotive Battery Labels

The battery is one of the most important components of any vehicle. It provides energy for all of the different electrical features and systems, from the air conditioning to the starter. And, just like other car components, automotive batteries need accurate and reliable labeling, with key information on each label to show the strength and voltage of each battery, along with other crucial details such as safety instructions and warnings. However, since many battery cases are made from polyolefin plastics, which are naturally resistant to adhesion, many traditional labels simply fail to stay in place or fade and wear away over time.

Polyfuze’s advanced polymer labels are the best choice for automotive battery labels. With the power of our polymer fusion technology, it’s possible to fuse each car battery label straight into the polyolefin plastic shell, ensuring that the label stays in place for the life of the battery and won’t peel, separate, or fade over time. Because these labels are made from the same material as the battery case, these labels are the only truly permanent and sustainable solution for automotive batteries, as well as any polyolefin plastic.

Labels for Windshield Washing Systems

The windshield is a key component of any car, providing a wide and clear viewing window so that the driver can see ahead of them. It needs to be kept clean for safety reasons, which is why vehicles are developed with their own windshield washer systems, with various components working together to keep the glass clean and wash away any marks or messes. And it’s important for the parts of this system, like the plastic container under the hood which stores the washer fluid, to have the correct labels. However, attaching standard adhesive labels to such components ultimately won’t work long-term, as they simply wear, peel, or fade away due to the nature of the plastics they are made of.

A typical windshield washer fluid container label is exposed to changing temperatures, chemical substances, and other conditions that degrade adhesives. Polyfuze combats this problem in a whole new way. Our polymer fusion labels are made from the same material as the part they are going on, allowing the two to be fused together through heat. These labels are the only ones designed for permanent usage with polyolefin plastics, and they’re the perfect choice for use in windshield washer systems.

Polymer Fusion
Labeling Technology
For Automotive Applications

Polymer Fusion is the science of merging two separate low surface energy plastic polymers together (polyolefin label + polyolefin component) utilizing melting point, time, and pressure, which produces a singular piece of plastic without the use of adhesives, tie-layers, bonding agents, or secondary surface treatments.

The result is permanent labeling for automotive parts and components that cannot be lifted, separated, or removed for the life-use of the product no matter the harsh environment or exposure.

Where adhesion and other labeling methods continue to fail, Polymer Fusion Labels were engineered specifically to be 100% compatible and 100% recyclable with all polyolefin thermoplastics used in automotive applications. They have been proven to surpass performance and durability standards no matter the use, environment, or exposures meaning they not only meet the automotive industry’s 15+ year requirement for label durability, they exceed it.
